Illustrative Voices' Foundations Series focuses on the fundamentals skills needed to be a successful artists.

Life Drawing, Color Theory & Design, and Observational Painting are the core of our Foundations Series. Our Foundations Series focus on understanding how the interaction of light and shadow values and shapes create the form of objects, and how form is used to visually interpret their design.

Foundations Series classes are offered once a week at a regularly scheduled time and are approximately 2-hours long.

Color Theory & Design 

Learn about color harmony and unity through the selective use of color schemes, saturation, temperature, and value contrast.

Color Theory & Design provides an in-depth study of color and design principles, as well as explores color harmony unity in design. This course covers topics such as muting and toning colors, color psychology, advancing/receding color, simultaneous contrast, color proportion, the influence of light temperature on color, design unity, and visual emphasis. Working primarily in gouache paint artists explore composition and layout through the selective use of color schemes, saturation, temperature, and value contrast for illustration projects.

This course also explores how diverse cultures use color for visual communication of mood, emotions, and feelings. Students will learn how diverse cultures use color for celebrations, holidays, and gatherings, and the meaning and symbolism behind those colors.

Life Drawing I

Learn the basics of form and value through the application of  light and shadow patterns, perspective, proportion, and composition in drawing.

Life Drawing I is a beginning level drawing class where artists analyze how value, light and shadow, and perspective affect form. Working primarily in vine and compressed charcoal artists will create compositions from life in relation to line, shape & mass, space, light, textures & patterns, and rhythm. Working primarily in graphite, vine and compressed charcoal artists explore composition and layout for illustration projects.

Life Drawing II is an intermediate level drawing class where artists analyze how value, light and shadow, and perspective affect form. Working primarily in graphite pencils and graphite sticks artists will create compositions from life in relation to line, shape & mass, space, light, textures & patterns, and rhythm. Working primarily in oil and chalk pastel artists explore composition and layout for illustration projects.

Life Drawing III is an advanced level drawing class where artists analyze how value, light and shadow, and perspective affect form. Working primarily in oil and chalk pastels artists will create compositions from life in relation to line, shape & mass, space, light, textures & patterns, and rhythm. Working a variety of dry medium such as graphite, charcoal, pastels, and conté crayon artists explore composition and layout for illustration projects.
